Bonus Poem of the Week: Power Surge

Power Surge
November 23, 2022

You’re in the middle of working on your computer one day,
Making sure the project you’re working on comes out great in every way.
Then suddenly…ZAP! Your computer screen flicks off to a bitter black,
And you stare at it in disbelief, trying to stave off a panic attack.
After all, there’s no storm outside raging—no lightning or heavy winds
And especially no hail—to put your computer in the shape it’s now in,
Yet your electricity just went out with the snap of Heaven’s fingers
Only to come back a second or two later while the “dirty power” lingers
Inside your trusty machine, quite possibly having fried your motherboard,
And all because you had it on at a time when Fate decided It was bored
And scorched your PC just for “funsies.” Thrill! Now what do you do?
Try to turn it back on right away and see how the poor thing acts up on you
By freezing in place at the bootup screen so you can’t log in at all
And must force it off, lest you want to watch it forever grind and stall?
Perhaps you’d rather wait a day or two for its innards to at last cool off
Before trying again and see if the bootup screen at you doesn’t scoff
And, if possible, work on your laptop, should you have one on hand?
Then again, the experts have a trick you can use to derail Fate’s cruel plan:
Unplug the power cable, hold the power button for five seconds, then
Press the button to turn your unit “off” before plugging your unit in again.
Then turn your computer on and listen and look for any more mishaps.
If you don’t hear or see anymore, then your PC’s fine after all. Congrats!
If not, then it’s to the repair shop with it. Hope you’ve your wallet on hand—
Especially if your warranty’s run out. Better luck next time, lady or man.
After all, even with a surge protector helping us out against such shock,
Power surges can happen to any computer user, whether we like it or not.
It’s always a chore when one is in store, but then again, even machines
Don’t last forever, no matter the weather, come calm winds or obscene.
Here’s to knowing what to, should one hit you, though, and the serenity you’ll need,
Should one claim your PC after all, no matter how hard the loss makes you bleed.
