Song of the Week: I Can’t Get Over You

Hey, readers!

While I’m currently searching for agents in hopes that someone out there will represent Dream Roamers: Tyler’s Journey through the Kingdom of Somnia to the right publisher, I’m still keeping up with my weekly “Poem/Song of the Week” series, and this week, I’ve chosen a little love ballad that I’d written the lyrics for nine years ago that was by no small means inspired by all the love songs from the 1980s and 1990s that I used to listen to during my younger days. Wuthout further ado, then, here’s I Can’t Get Over You. Enjoy!

I Can’t Get Over You

Verse A
I don’t know how long it’s been since we were last together.
All I know is that it’s been too long.
Even so, my love for you has yet to be extinguished.
In fact, it never has been quite this strong,
And though I try to carry on with the rest of my life,
I still can’t help the way I feel.
Now I’m telling you, darling, as the tears fall from my eyes
That this love I have for you is real.

Verse 1
I can’t deny it anymore. It’s just something I can’t hide,
So let me tell you ‘bout what I’ve kept for so long deep inside.

Chorus A
I can’t get over you—
No matter what I say, no matter what I do.
This sensation is nothing new.
It’s just longing and desire I’ve always had for you.
If there’s one thing I know is true,
It’s that I can’t get over you.

Verse B
It’s not your beauty that draws me so close to you,
Nor is it your talent or your grace,
But it’s something I know you hold within yourself—
Something I sense whenever I see your face.
It’s the very essence of the girl who still resides in you,
Who blesses you with charm and innocence.
She’s the girl I met on the day I first met you,
The same girl I’ve been in love with since.

Verse 2
See, from that day forward, I could never love another girl
Because you’re the only one I want in this entire world.

Chorus B
I can’t get over you—
No matter what I say, no matter what I do.
If it’s my love I need to prove,
I’ll do what it takes to make it real to you.
I just want you to know that it’s true—
I can’t get over you.

I’ve tried as hard I can to imagine
My life with someone else by my side,
But doing so only brings guilt and shame upon me,
And I know it’s just my pride
That numbs the strain plaguing my heart
Every time you and I are apart.
I can’t help thinking ‘bout you, so I’ll tell you this:
It’s time for us to make a new start…

…because it’s just like I’ve said…

Repeat Chorus A, then Chorus B.

Darling, you know that it’s true.
I can’t get over you.

Well, that should do it for this week. I hope that you enjoyed this piece, and I you have any feedback for it, please don’t hesitate to share it—particularly if you’re a song writer yourself and have any pointers on how I can rewrite these lyrics. In the meantime, thanks for stopping by again, and as always, happy reading!
